Haibo Phanda NPO 319-995: Empowering Mzanzi Through Al Digital Literacy

Haibo Phanda is a non-profit organisation (NPO) dedicated to bridging the digital divide in South Africa through Al literacy. Our core mission is to empower South African youth and small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) with the Al digital literacy skills needed to thrive in an increasingly Al-driven world.

"Haibo Phanda"

"Haibo" is an expression of surprise or disbelief, often used as an interjection. "Phanda" translates to "strive" or "persevere." In the context of Al digital literacy, "Haibo Phanda" encapsulates the potential initial surprise or disbelief at the complexities of Al, followed by the encouragement to persevere and embrace the opportunities this technology presentWe

We are committed to guiding youth and SMMEs through the challenges of Al, fostering a sense of wonder and determination to succeed in the digital landscape.

The Critical Need for Al Digital Literacy

Al is rapidly reshaping industries and societies globally, and South Africa is no exception. Equipping youth and SMMEs with Al digital literacy is no longer a choice but a necessity for their future success. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 highlights a critical Al skills gap, with over 60% of companies reporting challenges in adapting to business transformation due to this shortage.

Why Focus on Youth?

South African youth are increasingly active in the digital sphere, utilising online platforms for education, creativity, and social connection. Haibo Phanda recognises the importance of involving young people in discussions and policy-making related to digital rights. Their unique perspectives are invaluable in identifying specific challenges and developing effective solutions to ensure a more inclusive and equitable digital future.

South Africa has a substantial youth population (approximately 22.12 million individuals aged 0-19).

Early Al education cultivates creativity and problem-solving skills across diverse sectors, including education, design, creative industries, and finance.

Why Focus on SMMEs?

Al offers SMMEs tools and applications to optimise operations, scale, enhance decision-making, improve customer experiences, and increase efficiencies.

Digital literacy enables SMMEs to leverage Al for tasks such as predictive analytics, financial/business intelligence, and customer engagement solutions. SMMEs with limited resources can automate routine tasks, freeing up resources for strategic growth.

Through AI, SMMEs enhance decision-making for complex analyses, providing customers with personalised services and products, like summarising business data and creating snapshot business plans.
